White Bluff UMC Mission Trip Report
A group of fourteen people left from White Bluff UMC in Savannah and were joined by three more from Austin, Texas. On the flight to San Pedro Sula in Honduras, the group realized that Dr. Larry Whiting and his wife Laurie were also on the flight. Dr. Whiting and his wife are missionaries in Siguatepeque and would be working with our team while in Honduras.
It is always a great feeling to look past the customs agents and see a familiar face when we arrive. Paz Cardona, a dentist, who always arranges our in-country travel and ministry was waiting for us.. We quickly loaded up, bought supplies for the week, and started our two-and-a-half hour journey to Siguatepeque where we would be working.
The plan was to minister to five different villages over our six-day stay. The group was divided up to do a Bible School program, a dental clinic, and a medical clinic in each location. Six long days of work were rewarded by the responses seen in the faces of the villagers, both adults and children, many of whom walked long distances to be seen in the clinic.
Local pastors and people from their churches came to each village to assist in ministry. We started each day's work with Dr. Paz preaching. Those who responded were sought out by the pastor and others from his church for additional counseling. In at least one of the villages, the pastor had plans to return on the following Sunday for a church service with the villagers.
The team did a tremendous job of working together. Each one was quick to help wherever needed, and all were ministered to by the Honduran people just as much as the love of Christ was shared by the team. We are grateful to Mission on the Move for enabling us to participate in sharing Christ with our friends in Honduras.
Chris Wisener's thoughts on Honduras
“Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to look after orphans
and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” - James 1:27
What happens when a bunch of people get together to make a difference for Christ? One word: impact. They impact peoples’ lives in amazing and powerful ways. This summer we went to Honduras to make that impact. The gospel was preached, medical relief was given, dental care was provided, and children were shown love. Many people accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior as we came to bring the love and light of Christ into their world. In James we find out that taking care of the down trodden, poor, and/or broken is pure religion. As Christians the kind of impact we make in this world should be good, righteous, and characterized by love. The impact we make on their lives is more than we will ever know, but what we will know is the impact that we receive from doing God’s work. Every time I go to Honduras my faith is strengthened, my love for people is deepened, and my connection with God becomes clearer. It is not that Honduras is special, but that the work we do there is of God. John Wesley was a man who also made a huge impact in the world around him for Christ.
A quote from him that has encouraged me to make an impact in this world goes like this:
“Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can.
In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can.
As long as you ever can.”
Let us continue to stand fast as lights for Christ as the world continues to do
what it desires in the darkness.
