Santa Elena, Honduras
In Honduras, we have a 7 acre complex, known as our Christian Family Life Center, in the small mountain village of Santa Elena. The Mission provides health, education and nutritional services to the children and families living there and in the settlements of La Guama and Los Pinos nearby. Honduras offers free public schools through the fifth grade but the families of older children must pay about $1500 per year if they want to continue their studies. The average family income is $31 per week, with most not finding steady work at all. MOM provides scholarships to make school possible for students enrolled in our program. We give the kids in our program 2 meals a day, sometimes the only meals they get, a place to shower, learn bible stories and songs and get help with homework. Our leaders and teachers are taught how to properly and safely prepare and store food, and clean the kitchen and dishes to prevent disease. We currently have about 80 students in the program ranging in age from pre-school through 16 years old.
We usually have about 3-4 medical mission teams a year going to Honduras to offer free medical, dental and eye care to the local people. Mission On The Move has also purchased a 10 acre hospital/clinic property there in Honduras which once restored to useable condition could open up a whole new avenue of service to the local people. Restoration will take time and money, but we are hoping that once complete we could send a medical team every month to aid the people of Santa Elena and surrounding areas.
